I have always had a fascination for Queen Elizabeth and for some reason, I thought that I would be able to drape the pattern for this dress:

I had to make a cardboard joke of a farthingale and after much pleating and pinning I was finished. As we just made a pattern, I didn't think the draping pictures were too interesting. However, we just finished our Recycled Elements project in which we had to make a garment out of any recycled material that wasn't fabric. It was very much like Project Runway, except we had more time, and the crap people in our class are still "in"...so I get to finish the class.

Anyway, I made a 60's inspired dress out of cardboard because 1) I think it is my favorite fashion period and 2) I had a large box from a desk I had just gotten. I was also inspired by the 1943 Guide to Hiring Women (yes, I know it a different decade, but it reminded me of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying alla "A secretary is not a toy, no my boy, not a toy."). The hope was to make a statement on how women were stuck into the profession as a secretary during that time (if any profession), and were "boxed in" behind the desk. So here is some of it (I had a dreadful time with the back, so that part is not featured), and it can actually be worn...I have done it...

That thing on top is supposed to be a hat...

This also had a chance to be in an Earth Day fashion show, but I have yet to find a model who would want to wear it, and I am not sure anyone would really care to see this walk down a catwalk.

Also, I was bored one night during another run of wardrobe crew and I made a creature and ending up giving it to my boss the costume shop manager (no pictures). My costume professor saw it the next day and almost demanded that she buy one from me. I told her that I would make her one for free, and once I gave it too here, she squealed for a good 2.27 minutes. A job well done.

Winky Blinky

Winkly Blinky was named by a friend for his 2 different sized eyes. I got lazy over my break of course and I will post all my Christmas gifts a bit later. For now I feel I MUST showcase my fine work in my costuming class from the past semester.

As I said earlier I had to design 4 costumes for a show (I chose Arsenic and Old Lace) but not make them, and then create one garment (I made a vest). Here is the work that helped me to get my A.

On to Costuming 2 in a week, and for practice I made these pants. However, I am really excited and I may even be designing my first show next semester (needless to say it is going to be a low budget project; its our drama club).

Anyway, this semester in costuming we have done mostly hand sewing and machine sewing samples (not the most fun, so I have decided to subject no one to any pictures of these). We watched the movie version of An Ideal Husband and took one person's costume and made a collaged rendering of one of their costumes in modern times (I got an A!). We also recently made a reusable grocery bag. I will most likely be using it as a fabric transportation device. However, I have to be honest here. I sped through this project, probably because I got a little cocky, so it isn't my best sewing:

I am now working on our written final which is basically taking a period play (before the 1960's) and designing 4 costumes for it. I have chosen Arsenic and Old Lace because I thought it would be fun (yes mother, I know you gave me the 1930's research book, but I didn't have enough time to find a play from that period in the theatre's storage room...). Part 2 of our final is creating some sort of garment, and I will be going to the shop on Friday.

I'm taking Costuming 2 next semester and I really do want to do this with my life, so expect more posts in the future, and I apologize if you have just been bored to death.

Shit Face

I have been wanting to make a small quilt for awhile, and after seeing this "Face" series by Regina Alexandra, I wanted to get my grubby little hands on one just like them. Since they are probably really expensive, and they didn't look too hard to make, I decided to fashion one myself from my own design. Considering I don't have a rotary cutter and board, or a space for cutting, I think it turned out quite well. I have managed to do quite well in this little room, and maybe someday I will be able to make a bigger quilt.

The quilt has a few sad problems. Of coarse since it was my first quilt, the construction is a little wonky. The color blue I chose for it is the wrong shade of blue, but I guess there is nothing wrong in adding another color to the room. Also, it is hard to see, but the thought bubble is embroidered with the word shit, mainly because I wanted to be able to call the quilt "Shit Face."

Here is what the back looks like:

Quite Literally a Steal

I was helping clean up our Drama Club's theatre today, and I got to walk away with these little finds.

They reminded me a little of my brother's suitcase table, and I have recently taken a liking to old suitcases. I was helping to organize props, and these were going to be thrown out, because one wouldn't close fully and the other doesn't have a handle. I couldn't let them disappear, so I took them. Because of the size, pictures don't do it justice, but I do like this room the best, because all my stuff is close, so it looks more decorated. Well, at least I think so. You will notice that I have some empty wall space. The objects I made before classes started looked like shit, so they didn't make it to the wall, but I am working on the disgusting empty white spaces.

I made this quaint little wall organizer awhile ago in the summer, but it wasn't till now that it could grace my wall. I figured I might try to make some things this year and sell them. I don't have a shop yet, but I have started to make more creatures, and I will to force people to purchase them (since I don't have a better job) as soon as I have made a fair number of them. Hopefully it will work...I will have to start networking if I want my future shop to be seen

I am also in a costuming class. I really like it, but some of the stuff has been boring since I know how to hand sew, use a machine, etc. Our final project is to make one article of clothing, but I haven't decided what yet. Hopefully whatever it is doesn't leave other people with disgust.

Surprise!

Bugsy over at A Day in the Life of Bugsy has given me this award. It has been a long week and a half by myself with no where to go. The worst part was that I had no sewing machine or even any needles and thread (gasp!). I did purchase some faux fur, so there will be creatures in the future. However, as I start school and a new play next week, my free time will be lacking.

Quilts on the Move

Well, it has once again come time for me to move all of my stuff into another dorm room. Oops. Sorry, residence hall (my supervisor would have my head). My room is a mess right now, but I have made another little something for my room next year. I won't post about it until I am fully moved in (which won't be until the end of August; I can't stay in my new room yet) because it is packed up already. I also have some other ideas for wall art that I will make during my down time in the next few weeks. My walls have all been too bare, so that will have to change.

In the meantime, my mom made me a nice throw quilt. I had found the pattern entitled "Posh" by Chez Moi and I was planning to use it to try and make my first quilt. However, on a recent trip to see the rents, my mom suggested that she instead whip it up for me. I couldn't decline, so together we picked out the fabrics and I just got it in the mail.

I was actually at work when I picked up the package, and I couldn't wait to open it, so my supervisor was also forced to gaze at the beauty. I'm not a freak at all... So thank you mom, wherever you are! Denyse Schmidt's book once again provided the pattern for this recently finished project. After living in dorms for awhile, I've gotten sick of getting my feet dirty on the old carpets. I didn't want to wear shoes indoors, so I just HAD to make these ever so masculine slippers (maybe I could've just clean the carpets...).

Look at how beautiful my feet look in these puppies! As you can see, I was actually clenching my toes so that it appeared like my feet weren't too big for these. Due to wacky sizes and instructions, I had to tweak the pattern more than I wanted to, and as a result the soles are too small and the strap is too big. As it turns out they are less than useful, because when I walk my toes poke out at the front, the slipper flies off, or the toes of the sole curl under and I end up walking on top of them. Oh well. They were fairly quick to make and if nothing else, they could become a lovely gift for some unsuspecting person with awkward feet.

Happy Birthday to Me

I suppose it is a little depressing when I have to make my own friend for my birthday. Okay, so that may not be the reason that I made this, but I made him nonetheless, so here he is. His name is Tobias Beckendorff, or Toby for short.

You know that kid in school who gets picked last in gym class? Well, that's Toby. No one really talks to him ever, but that is alright, because Toby prefers the company of Jeremiah (Jeremiah has never been seen by anyone else, and many people think that Jeremiah is an empty can of sardines, but don't tell Toby that). Toby wants to be an actor when he grows up, but if he doesn't get to speech therapy soon, his lisp could shoot that dream down. His unique prehistoric looks might help him to snag a gig, but Toby doesn't really know if he descended from ancient creatures, because 2 years ago he found his biological mother (he's adopted by the way) and she looks more like a giraffe than she does a dinosaur...

So Much Fabric, So Little Time.

A recent weekend trip to see the parents certainly inspired a rush of sewing this week. Okay, so it may have actually been the large amounts of fabric and patterns given to me by mom during that stay. Nevertheless, I have been on a constant sewing spree since I have said goodbye to mom and dad.

My new room comes complete with a kitchen, and with a kitchen one must have hot pads. Very well then. Upon receiving Lotta Jansdotter's book Simple Sewing, I whipped up these lovely hot pads. Now I can fully embrace my laziness and not have to get up to put away my remote control, or my glasses. Perfect. Thanks to Thelma for modeling the full potential of this pocket.

Next I had to of coarse make a bag for my future trips home. Who could go without a sewing bag when they re situate themselves? How did I do it before? The large bag (featuring a decorative sock monkey key ring from mom) also came from Lotta Jansdotter's book, but the smaller, zipper bag was designed by me, loosely based on a pattern from Denyse Schmidt's book, Quilts.

That is all for now, but there are certainly more projects to come and I am also working on a new creature right now... Speaking of creatures, as I went home this past weekend, I discovered that No Name is alive. He is safety residing in my closet.

The Evil Spool of Thread

So, my mom wanted a nice little pin cushion form me. Her two qualifications were that it had to be quilting/sewing related and it had to be strange or fun. I went for the strange idea, and thus the world was introduced to this little fellow. Now my mom can take out her frustration this little contraption. It may only be two items, but the combination of the two creates an...interesting (to say the least) mystery. The first item was a pair of my underwear that I had seen the morning before the crime (so strange and odd). The next was a sock creature that I had made over my holiday break. It was not one of my better ones, and he was sadly never named. However, I think that it is important to have a elegy-like post for this creature. The poor guy did not live much of a good live cooped up in my closet, but it did not deserve this horrible crime. Unless he is found soon (There is less than a 1% chance that he was misplaced by me. I keep track of my items, and I had seen him recently in his living quarters), No Name is presumed dead. If this creature is alive, may he be treated correctly and unharmed...

I pray that he has actually been misplaced or taken home. If this is the case, I apologize for my horrendous accusations, but only time will tell. I shall know the truth when I visit home in a few months.

RIP poor No Name.

I DO make stuff outside of class...

Well, the time has finally come to move out of my dorm room. It has been a long first year at college, and there have been many memories in this room. However, although my room was of coarse very pleasant on the eyes, the memories won't necessarily be good ones. I am definitely ready to leave this place for awhile. Oh wait... For our final project, we had to carve our head out of foam, and it had to be realistic and anatomically correct. The foam was extremely hard to work with and I think each week I got more and more frustrated. To make matters worse, I had to also create a pedestal. Naturally, I decided to sew some arms out of fleece (with my mom's old sewing machine)... AND, we had one week less than the other classes. Great. It certainly doesn't look like me, but people pretended to like it.

Hanging Out

Wow. I will post it soon.

And in other news, I am trying to sign up for an Intro to Costuming class for next fall. I sewed my red linen to foam and chicken wire to make a container, which was what we were told to make. It turned out to look like a few things. I have gotten, one of those Alaskan baby pouch things, a mouth of a worm, a phallic symbol, among others. I think I have an idea of what I am going for when I combine the three pieces, but I will have to wait until after I make the final component. I have to connect my components with the last material I chose, which was aluminum foil. I think I can make it work...

Lovely decoration in the background, no (I see my toe made it into the shot as well...)? Well actually, my room is currently a mess because I am getting ready to move all my crap from room to room. My parents graciously piled all of the stuff I will need for my next semester (I am working on campus over the summer) in my room. I also made sure that my mom's old sewing machine was brought back with me, so that now I can be the weird roommate who sews on their machine in the common room. I am alright with that. We have to make 3 separate pieces (one per week) and at the end of 3 weeks we have to put them together in some way to convey our concept. My concept is mainly about how I have felt lost and awkward during my first year at college and it is only until now that I have integrated myself into a social group (oh woe is me...). My first part was due today and we were required to make a closed abstract shape and cover it with any unique material we chose. I chose steel wool, and after purchasing what seemed like 20 pounds of it, and covering 3 pillows with it (who knew hand sewing steel wool would actually work), I made this awkward piece:

For next week we have to make some container-like piece that we will cover with our latest material of choice. I got a lot of bright red fabric to use this week, and I think it might actually make something interesting. If not, then I guess I am screwed. It could go either way. I could make a masterpiece, or I might end up with something that I wouldn't even be able to give to the needy.

I also have to choose a new material for next week. This could end in disaster. I will update next week.

eww...ming...

What a better way to spend the Easter holiday than finishing a new project. I finally finished a project that I started over my Christmas break. Mr. Ming was once a sumo wrestler, but he has since retired and has taken up the highly sought after position of manager at the local used car lot. He is part of a (hopefully) new set of plush characters called Little Mingers. They are based on the random strange and sometimes gross people that we see on the street in our everyday lives, and their made up life stories. Mr. Ming may have to change his name, because I don't want it to match the title of this wonderful cast of characters, but we will see. In the near future, I hope to make many strange, politically incorrect characters. The next one in the works is a Hell's Angel who makes his living as Santa Claus in a year round Christmas store.

Spring Break

Unlike many drunken college spring breaks, mine was not spent at the beach with a beer in each hand. I instead sat in front of my mom's sewing machine with a project in each hand. I didn't get as much done as I wanted since I only had access to a machine for 3 days. However, I did work on several projects, and I only finished one. It is a handy little iPod cover made from a sock (of coarse), with some embroidery embellishment. I was going for a rugged, used look, but I'm pretty sure that that is difficult to accomplish with embroidery, to say the least. I made a different version for my friend as well, who was kind enough to drive me to and from the sewing machine's residence.

Sock Creatures

Thank you to John Murphy for his wonderful book, Stupid Sock Creatures which inspired me a year or so ago. I could choose between Drawing and Sculpture, so obviously, the crafter in me was drawn to the sculpture class, so that is where I ended up (I guess it also had something to do with my lack of drawing skills...). I have no problem saying that I was scared beyond belief on my first day this semester. I am by no means a Studio Arts major, but most of the people in my class have an emphasis on drawing, so as it turns out we are all struggling through the world of contemporary art together. Great. I have a great teacher who certainly knows her stuff, and for this reason, I am proud to show some of my work.

For our second project (my first project was pretty much just a catastrophe of paper bags, wire, glue and paper...) we had to choose one emotion and construct it and the emotion's opposite. My semi morbid brain choose disgust as the main emotion. I made this blob-like form entirely from chicken wire and plaster, but the icing on the cake is definitely (its hard to see) the petroleum jelly which highlights certain areas of the piece. Yes, I for sure made people touch it and they were grossed out. Job complete.

The other emotion I chose was excitement. My intent was to make the piece seem as if it was bursting out of the wall, kind of like it was rushing towards something (I presented the piece on a wall in our "Installation Room": a room consisting of 4 pure white walls). The form is made from chicken wire and plaster bandage, but the surface is not as smooth as I would have liked it. During critique my professor mentioned enamel to give it a slick, shiny surface. This would have been nice, but I am not made of money! However, it is fun to venture down to the hardware store and watch as the workers give me, a clueless, puny guy the weirdest looks.

I am not sure what our next project is, but apparently that is the point (?). I am currently wasting away in my second semester, but the crafts help me to get through it. Why this room itself has helped me great through 2 different roomates

It all really started before college (I did a lot of hand sewing in high school), but my mom and I got really bored one summer and we went shopping for my future dorm room. Needless to say, it is probably the most decorated of all the guy rooms on campus. It makes for good small talk.

Many of these goodies came from family members. My mom and my brother both made pillows for me and I made the small rug that can be seen under my backpack. And certainly I have to send many thanks to my mom for her hours of sweat shop work on the quilt. It is after all the focal point of my room. Yes, I guess my family consists of some crafting freaks. My other brother and my poor dad have had to sit through various long discussions of sewing.
